Purpose: At the end of this live education program, the learner will develop increased skill in the use of EtCO2 monitoring and stethoscope assessment in determining appropriate interventions for the patient requiring ventilation management.

Target Audience: Pre-hospital providers responsible for assessment and intervention in patients requiring ventilation management.

0800 – 1000 - Slap the Cap! The Role of Capnography in EMS

  • Describe the structure and function of the upper and lower airways.

  • Describe the mechanics and science of ventilation and respiration.

  • Describe the relationship between ventilation and perfusion.

  • Describe the technology of EtCO2 measurement.

  • Identify normal and abnormal capnogram waveforms.

  • Given various cases, discuss the role of capnography in identifying the problem and management of the patient.

1000 – 1015 - Break

1015 – 1200 - Slap the Cap! The Role of Capnography in EMS (continued)

1200 – 1330 - Lunch on Your Own

1330 – 1530 - Stethoscopy

  • Describe the proper use of the stethoscope.

  • Identify normal and abnormal breath sounds.

1530 - 1545 - On-Line Evaluation

Texas Emergency Medical Services (EMS): BorderRAC is recognized as a Texas Department of State Health Services provider of continuing education (Course Number 101792).
