Program Overview

BorderRAC is leading a regional initiative to implement Prehospital Whole Blood (PHWB) for the treatment of trauma patients in hemorrhagic shock.

PHWB is the transfusion of whole blood collected from donors and transfused to patients without separating the components.

This program strengthens our region's trauma system and brings life-saving care directly to the point of injury.

HOW PREHOSPITAL WHOLE BLOOD WORKS

  • 1. ASSESS

    Identify trauma patient in hemorrhagic shock.

  • 2. TRANSFUSE

    Administer whole blood in the prehospital setting per protocol.

  • 3. TRANSPORT

    Continue resuscitation and transport to the appropriate facility.

  • 4. CONTINUE CARE

    Handoff and continue definitive care at the receiving hospital.
